Fr. John Slater
Fr. John was educated at evening classes at Working Men's College, London and the University of Kent where he gained a B.A. Hons. Theology.
His early work-life started as an office clerk, then he trained as a nurse with the mentally handicapped. Following this he became a Verger in the Church of England; this included being Canons' Verger of St. Paul's Cathedral, London.
In 1961 he married Sheila. His personal faith drew him to consider a position as a minister within the Church of England. He studied for the Anglican Priesthood at Lincoln Theological College and was ordained a priest at Chelmsford's Anglican Cathedral in December, 1974. His ministries within the Anglican Community saw him see service in: Leytonstone, Whitstable, Ilford and Clipstone near Mansfield.
Eventually, after much soul-searching and prayer Fr. John was received into the Roman Church. At first he was a Deacon. However, the Church in Rome recognised his ordination as a Catholic priest.
Fr. John and Sheila came to St. Peter's, Westgate, in 1996.
Born to an Anglican family in 1938, at Balderton, near Newark, Nottinghamshire.
